"The union president said it's unlikely city firefighters will agree to give up $680,000 — roughly $5,000 each — which officials said will keep firehouses open, prevent 10 layoffs, and hire new firefighters this year. . . . Without some sort of cost-savings, the city plans to lay off 10 firefighters."
